How Viagra Works? Who Should Not Take This Medication?

Sildenafil or Viagra belongs to phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors, a group of medications. It is formulated to treat male impotence or erectile dysfunction. It is helpful to achieve and maintain proper erection for having sex. It improves the blood flow into the penis when you are sexually excited. It doesn’t promote libido and works only with stimulation. This medication is available in different forms and under several brand names. Any specific brand of Canadian Viagra may not be offered in all the forms. Some kinds of this medication may not be suited for all the conditions. 

This medication may not be suggested by the doctor for conditions other than the ones listed here. If you haven’t discussed it with the doctor or not sure why you are going to take it, be sure to talk to the doctor. Consult with the doctor when you want to stop using this medication. Don’t recommend this medication to anyone else, even though they have same symptoms. If doctors haven’t prescribed it to your friend, it may be harmful for him. 

Dosage

25mg – Each round, blue, diamond shaped tablet with “VGR 25” on one side and “PFIZER” on the other, contains 25mg of sildenafil or sildenafil citrate. 

50mg – Tablet with “VGR 50” on one side and “PFIZER” on another contains 50mg of sildenafil. Some of the non-medical ingredients are croscarmellose sodium, anhydrous dibasic calcium phosphate, hypromellose, magnesium sterate, lactose, cellulose, triacetin, titanium dioxide, etc.  

100mg – Each tablet marked “VGR 100” on one side and “PFIZER”  on another contains 100mg of sildenafil. 

Who Shouldn’t Take Viagra? 

Sildenafil is not intended for those who are – 


  • Allergic to any of its ingredients

  • Taking any kind of nitrate drug in any form i.e. spray, oral, skin patch, or under the tongue. Nitrate drugs consist of nitroglycerin and other related medications used for angina or chest pain relief. They have amyl nitrite “poppers”. With sildenafil, these medications can cause sudden drop in BP which can cause fainting, dizziness, stroke or heart attack

  • Advised by the doctor not to have sex

  • Have history of vision issues due to nerve damage to retina and reduced blood flow. 

Nitrates are added in drugs used to treat chest pain. If you don’t know whether your medication has nitrate, be sure to ask your pharmacist or doctor. If you are taking it, be sure to avoid nitrates as they can reduce the blood pressure severely which may cause heart attack, dizziness, stroke or fainting.

What Happens if You Skip the Dose? 

Viagra is not a drug that should be used daily. It can be used when needed. So, you can skip the dose. 

What If I Overdose It? 

You have to seek immediate medical attention. 

What to Avoid When Taking Viagra? 

When taking Viagra, be sure to avoid alcohol as it can cause some serious side effects. Grapefruit juice and grapefruit may interact with this medication and lead to unwanted side effects. So, be sure to avoid using grapefruit products while taking it. Also avoid any other medications for impotence and don’t take it without asking the doctor.
